Helen Morgan has said she will ‘fight for WASPI women’ as data reveals that an estimated 31,870 women in Shropshire could be affected.

The Government has announced that it will not compensate women hit by changes to the state pension age, despite backing campaigners in opposition and the report of the independent Ombudsman recommending compensation.

Data from the House of Commons Library, using population estimates, indicates that 31,870 women across the five Shropshire constituencies could be impacted.

Nearly 7,000 of these women live in North Shropshire, represented by Helen Morgan MP. She has hit out at Labour’s decision, calling on Ministers to change course.

Helen Morgan, MP for North Shropshire, said, “These shocking figures show that tens of thousands of women in Shropshire been betrayed by the Government’s decision to not compensate WASPI women. This is simply wrong.

“The Government has turned its back on millions of women who were wronged through no fault of their own, ignoring the independent Ombudsman’s recommendations – despite prior commitments from Labour MPs and Cabinet Ministers to support the WASPI campaign.

“The Conservatives left our economy in a shambles, but pensioners shouldn’t be asked to pay the price. The Liberal Democrats will fight for WASPI women in Shropshire – the Government must urgently change course and rethink this shameful decision.”
