Helen Morgan backs Bill to guarantee vote on Australia and New Zealand Trade Deal
North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan has supported a Bill which would force the Government to give MPs a vote on the final Australia and New Zealand Trade Deals.
The Liberal Democrats tabled the Bill in Parliament today [November 16] after former DEFRA Secretary, George Eustice, branded the deal a “failure”.
Farmers across the country have called for a final vote for MPs after the Government refused to protect animal welfare standards.
Speaking after the Bill’s presentation in Parliament, Helen Morgan said, “The Government’s refusal to give Parliament a vote on these trade deals sets an outrageous precedent for our democracy.
“I regularly speak to farmers from across North Shropshire and they are all angry that the Conservatives have signed a deal which favours farmers Down Under instead of backing British.
“Throughout this entire process, MPs have not been given enough information, time or powers to represent constituents in these trade deal discussions.
“Liberal Democrats have taken matters into our own hands to push for a vote on both of these trade deals to ensure farmers’ voices are heard.”
