North Shropshire’s Liberal Democrat MP Helen Morgan has issued her verdict over the preliminary findings of the Office for Environmental Protection report on sewage dumping into UK rivers and waterways.

The preliminary report concludes that the government and regulators may have broken the law over how it regulates sewage releases.

Helen Morgan MP said, “The widespread dumping of sewage into our rivers and waterways is nothing short of a national scandal, and needs to be urgently addressed by the government and regulators.

“In local rivers like the Severn, Roden and Vyrnwy there are still thousands of hours of sewage outflows every year – this is not good enough, and the public are rightly demanding better.

“Protecting our countryside and natural environment is something that should be a fundamental duty of every government. That’s why Liberal Democrats have always voted to cut back on sewage dumping, whilst government MPs have regularly voted against taking strong action.”
