Helen Morgan has welcomed news that Whitchurch’s Civic Centre will be repaired or rebuilt after a successful campaign to save the building.

On Wednesday, Shropshire Council’s cabinet committed to funding a new roof for the centre or co-funding the rebuilding of the site if external funding can be found.

It comes one year after a report to the same council cabinet recommended demolishing the building due to the discovery of RAAC several months earlier.

A large local campaign and a public meeting attended by hundreds in Whitchurch led to the council setting up a working group to consider alternative options for the future of the site.

Helen has backed the campaign since the future of the site was first threatened, and the MP has been pressing the Government to help secure the future of the important community centre.

Now, the council has committed to spending £4 million on the centre and carrying out a ‘needs analysis’ to make sure that the set-up of the centre matches the needs of the local community.

Helen Morgan, Liberal Democrat MP for North Shropshire, said, “This is wonderful news for everyone in Whitchurch and the surrounding area who this time last year thought they were losing the Civic Centre for good.

“Everyone involved in the campaign to Save Our Civic deserves a huge amount of credit.

“I’m pleased that Shropshire Council has listened and recognised that sites like the Civic are important community centres that must be protected.

“I will be continuing to make the case in Parliament for further investment in Whitchurch.”
