Helen Morgan has highlighted the pressure local farmers are facing due to supermarket prices during a debate in Parliament.

Helen intervened on the Farming Minister to speak up for businesses in Shropshire that are facing pressure from rising import costs and supermarket price squeezes.

The North Shropshire MP noted how dairy farmers are particularly affected by supermarket prices and noted how Liberal Democrats had been calling for a Competition Market Authority investigation into price gouging long before the current investigation was announced.

Helen spoke in a Westminster Hall debate to Mark Spencer MP, Minister for Food, Farming, and Fisheries, after speaking to farmers in North Shropshire whose incomes are being squeezed by low supermarket prices.

Helen Morgan, Liberal Democrat MP for North Shropshire, said, “Farmers in North Shropshire tell me that they’re struggling to get by due to the double whammy of spiralling costs and the supermarket squeeze. Dairy farmers in particular are suffering due to the fall in milk prices recently.

“It is essential for the Government to conduct proper research into price gouging by supermarket giants to give farmers access to the fair marketplace they deserve.”

The Minister explained that the Government are now conducting their own research into this issue for dairy farmers, and plan to do the same for the horticultural sector and egg sector.
