Helen pledges support for Bowel Cancer Awareness Month
North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan attended a meeting led by Bowel Cancer UK last week to pledge her support for their campaign to increase public awareness of the condition. Every 30 minutes, someone in the UK dies of bowel cancer. Helen Morgan MP is keen for more Shropshire residents to ‘know the high five’ – a potentially life-saving technique developed by Bowel Cancer UK to help spot symptoms early on.
This comes off the back of recent survey data showing that nearly four in ten people in the country can’t name a single symptom of bowel cancer.
The five red flag symptoms of Bowel Cancer are:
- Bleeding from your bottom and/or blood in your stool.
- A persistent and unexplained change in bowel habit.
- Unexplained weight loss.
- Extreme tiredness for no obvious reason.
- A pain or lump in your tummy.
Helen Morgan MP said, “It is really important that there is greater public awareness of the signs of bowel cancer. By learning the ‘high five’ which has been developed by Bowel Cancer UK, we can help save more lives and get people checked up earlier.
“Someone dies of bowel cancer every 30 minutes in the UK. It’s the second biggest cancer killer, but it shouldn’t be – after all, it’s treatable and curable, and nearly everyone diagnosed at the earliest stages will survive the disease.
“Knowing the symptoms is so important – it really could save your life. That’s why I’m supporting Bowel Cancer UK this Bowel Cancer Awareness Month to ensure more people know the high five symptoms to tackle it at the root.”
