£72 million needed to fix crumbling hospitals in Shropshire
More than £70 million is needed to fix the backlog of repairs at hospitals in Shropshire, new analysis by the Liberal Democrats has found.
North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan has written to local health bosses to ask for Midlands Air Ambulance to be given a stable NHS contract and regular funding, securing the long-term future of the lifesaving organisation.
Midlands Air Ambulance is a charity which covers the six counties of the Midlands, making it the largest air ambulance operating area in the whole of the UK. Despite this, the organisation is a charity which does not have an NHS contract and does not receive funding from the NHS.
They are the only air ambulance service in the country which does not receive any NHS funding contribution.
The MP has intervened to urge Simon Whitehouse as the head of Shrewsbury, Telford, and Wrekin ICB, and other NHS leaders in the Midlands, to provide regular funding for the charity.
Helen Morgan, Liberal Democrat MP for North Shropshire, said, “Midlands Air Ambulance brings hospital level care to the most seriously ill and injured patients across the region, working closely with A&E departments and emergency services to save lives. Despite this, they don’t receive a penny in NHS funding contributions – the only part of the country where this is the case.
“NHS leaders know all too well the issues we face with ambulance waiting times and across emergency care. Proper funding of the air ambulance would secure its long-term future and improve their working links with the wider emergency care system, helping to save even more lives.
“Health bosses across the Midlands must get around the table and work together to support our vital air ambulance services in the long-term.”
