Helen Morgan highlights challenges facing schools in the county
Helen Morgan MP raised concerns about the issues rural schools are facing during a Parliamentary debate on education funding in the Midlands.
The North Shropshire MP intervened in a Westminster Hall debate to mention the specific issues local headteachers have informed her about regarding recent challenges to schools’ budgets.
Headteachers have specifically explained to Helen that they are simply unable to recruit the level of teaching talent they would like because of constraints to their budgets and difficulty attracting people to work in rural areas.
Heads have also mentioned the added pressure of trying to juggle staff pay raises to keep up with inflation and funding vital areas such as special needs provision and having enough staff to maintain manageable class sizes.
Helen Morgan, Liberal Democrat MP for North Shropshire, said, “In North Shropshire, I am told time and time again by headteachers that a lack of funding in their schools has led to teaching positions not being filled, students missing out on additional classroom support, and cuts to the provision of extracurricular activities. This is not to mention the lack of money available to deal with repairs to school buildings.”
Helen has raised the issue of rural schools receiving less cash than their urban counterparts and continues to stress this discrepancy to the government.
