Helen Morgan MP has backed calls to keep the triple lock and protect the 26,000 Shropshire pensioners in her constituency as the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite.

This comes ahead of Autumn Conference, where the Liberal Democrats are set to commit to the triple lock in the party’s draft manifesto for the next General Election. The commitment would ensure pensions rise in line with inflation, wages or 2.5% – whichever is highest – and make Lib Dems the only major party committed to maintaining the triple lock.

The North Shropshire MP says the policy would protect pensioners facing sky-high bills from the cost-of-living crisis, adding that pensioners deserve to have the security of knowing that the triple lock will be there to support them in future years.

Helen Morgan MP said, “Many pensioners in Shropshire are struggling enough as it is with the cost-of-living crisis and a turbulent economy – the last thing they need is even less security going forward.

“In rural areas like North Shropshire where people often have to rely on cars or live in less energy efficient housing, high costs of petrol and heating have had a real impact.

“The Liberal Democrats brought in the triple lock whilst in government, lifting thousands out of pensioners out of poverty. The policy has worked and has ensured that some of our most vulnerable older residents can grow old with a higher level of security and comfort, though there is still a lot of work to be done to ensure pensions remain fit for the future.

“Pensioners should not be made to pay the price for years of economic chaos under the Conservative Party. That’s why I am committing to backing the triple lock and supporting pensioners in our county now and in the future.”
