North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan has joined with a local pub landlord and town councillor to call for a crackdown on anti-social behaviour in Whitchurch.

This comes after several incidents including trouble caused by Walsall fans on the way to an away match at Wrexham last week.

The MP is calling for more focused community policing, and joining councillors who have raised concerns over rural police being dragged into Shrewsbury on match days.

Helen Morgan MP said:

“We need to see real action and resources dedicated to keeping our towns safe at night. Whitchurch has a growing night-time economy and is an attractive place to live, but with that comes the need for proper community policing and support at night.

“I have had far too many conversations with constituents who don’t feel safe at night or who have had to see some very unpleasant incidents unfold – we need action to tackle this.”

Gregory Ebbs, Whitchurch Town Councillor said:

“Out knocking on doors and speaking to residents in Whitchurch, anti-social behaviour and crime are issues that keep coming up.

“This really lets our town down and as a local business owner in Whitchurch myself and speaking to others with businesses, I know first hand the impact it’s having. Our town is growing fast and needs extra resourcing.

Ben Miller, landlord at the White Bear on Whitchurch High Street, said:

“Especially at the weekends, there should be more police visibility and patrolling cars. There used to be a way for pubs like ours to be able to get in touch with whoever was on duty so that if any trouble kicks off they were easily accessible – now we have to call 999 or non-emergency, which can take a lot longer.”
