Helen backs Macmillan’s Coffee Morning to highlight issues in cancer care
Helen Morgan MP signalled her backing for Macmillan Cancer Support’s campaign to ask ‘What Are We Waiting For?’ at this year’s Coffee Morning in Parliament.
Helen joined Macmillan to highlight the issues our cancer care system is facing in Shropshire, joining forces to raise awareness of the long waits for tests and treatment people living with cancer are facing across the country.
Analysis from Macmillan Cancer Support, showcased at the event, suggests that at least 100,000 people across the UK have seen their cancer worsen, or they have been left with fewer treatment options due to delays in being diagnosed and starting treatment over the past decade.
In June 2023, 38.7% of people started cancer treatment at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust within 62 days of their urgent referral. This is well below the expected standard of 85%.
Helen Morgan MP said, “Health services in Shropshire are a top campaigning priority for me, especially as cancer waiting times in our county remain scandalously long – just 39% of people started cancer treatment in Shropshire within 62 days of their urgent referral in June, compared to a target of 85%.
“I was really glad to show my support for Macmillan’s campaign that asks the simple question ‘What are we waiting for?’ and to raise awareness of the long waits for tests and treatment people are facing both in Shropshire and across the country.
“It is clear that we need urgent action on health services in Shropshire to get wait times for cancer referrals back on target, and to get people in this county the care they need.”
