North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan is backing a bid to boost the sports facilities in Market Drayton after visiting the town’s amateur club and seeing some of their projects in action.

Helen recently toured the facilities at Market Drayton Community Amateur Sports Club where Helen praised the ‘hard work and community spirit’ of the volunteers who run the organisation for the benefit of the town.

Helen took part in a boxing training session as part of the club’s Heart Programme which works with The Grove School and local police officers to support youngsters at risk of anti-social behaviour.

The MP has now written to express her support for the club’s bid to the Commonwealth Games Legacy Fund for funding to open a new community sports hall.

In her letter Helen argued that ‘the Club has already demonstrated how much of a positive impact that sport can have on people’s lives’.

Helen has held discussions with other sports clubs in the town and is keen to do everything possible to help improve facilities that are currently heavily reliant on local generosity for their upkeep.

Helen Morgan, MP for North Shropshire, said, “In Market Drayton, sports provision is limited and public transport is scarce. That’s why the work done by Market Drayton Community Amateur Sports Club is so important for the town, and in particular in giving opportunities to its young people who often feel that Drayton is an island.

“The work done by all at the club is fantastic, and they deserve real praise for providing such an important facility to the community. The next step is improving that provision, which means accessing funding – something I am committed to helping them do as best I can.”
