Clarity needed on state pension age changes (WASPI)
Helen Morgan has signed a Parliamentary Motion highlighting the plight of WASPI women and calling for the Government to abide by the findings of an independent ombudsman.
The ombudsman is due to report soon on compensation for the WASPI women affected by state pension age changes.
It comes in light of reports suggesting that the UK Government is considering bringing forward the increase in the state pension age to 68. A decision is expected in the coming months.
Helen commented, "The plight of the WASPI women and their ongoing fight for compensation makes clear what can happen when changes to the state pension age are mishandled. That is why the Government must publish its evidence before reaching a decision.
"I’m really concerned by reports that the increase in the age might be brought forward, despite life expectancy standing still or even falling.”

Notes
The full motion reads:
That this House notes with concern the losses borne by 1950s women as a result of maladministration by the Department for Work and Pensions; supports the independent inquiry of the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman; notes that on average over one hundred 1950s born women die daily, many of whom have suffered losses and die without compensation; and urges the Government to commit to meeting the compensation recommendations of the Ombudsman upon publication.
