Helen welcomes new Whitchurch Pool plans
North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan has welcomed recently lodged plans for permission to develop a new £13.1 million pool and fitness centre in Whitchurch.
Whitchurch has been without a pool since March 2020, an issue picked up and petitioned on by local campaigners in the area. The MP has previously argued that in the period whilst the pool has been shut, the council – who make a saving on the closure – should have put the money into transport to nearby Wem or Market Drayton facilities.
The new pool will be built on the same site as the current pool and youth centre.
Helen Morgan, MP for North Shropshire said, “It’s great to see plans progressing for a new pool in Whitchurch. Getting a facility back to town is long overdue, with what could end up as a four or five-year gap in provision for residents.
“North Shropshire often feels like it is at the bottom of the list when it comes to investment, so these plans are very welcome and residents are very excited by them.
“Even at this stage, I really hope that Shropshire Council will consider taking action to ensure children and young people can learn to swim by funding transport to pool facilities at Wem or Market Drayton.”
