Helen thanks local superstars during Volunteers' Week 2023
Helen Morgan has praised the work of ‘superstar’ charitable volunteers in North Shropshire and is encouraging others to consider volunteering their time to help their local community.
The MP’s comments come as Volunteers’ Week gets underway. Volunteers’ Week is the annual celebration of the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering in their communities.
The MP was fortunate enough to see firsthand the brilliant repair-work done by volunteers at Crickheath, where a mile and a half stretch of the Montgomery Canal has been restored and ceremonially reopened after 85 years of disuse. Those present were treated to a sea shanty whilst Mrs Morgan dramatically cut the ribbon.
Charity Commission data highlights that there are 3,071 volunteers working in the constituency of North Shropshire, and many more throughout the county. The work of volunteers is vital in allowing local charities to make a difference in their community, the voluntary sector and society as a whole.
Volunteers are at the heart of the charity sector, offering their time and energy to help those in need. This includes charity trustees—most of whom are volunteers. The Charity Commission offers a wide array of guidance and support to help trustees run their charities well so they can improve lives and strengthen society.
Helen Morgan MP said, “I have been really privileged to visit so many outstanding charities in North Shropshire, all of which rely on the dedication of local superstars who give their time generously. I want to thank all those who are giving up hours every week to support our local charities and congratulate them on everything they are doing to help these great organisations thrive. I would encourage all those who want to give back to their community to volunteer with a local charity.
“How appropriate that both the Montgomery Canal Grand Opening and Trefonen Hill Walks were this week, both real testaments to the work done by volunteers across the county!”
Orlando Fraser KC, Chair of the Charity Commission, said, “Amidst tightening economic pressures, Volunteers’ Week reminds us that there is more we can give to charity than just money. I would like to extend the Charity Commission’s gratitude to volunteers in North Shropshire, who give their time to improve their community, strengthen society and bring people together. Volunteers are the lifeblood of charity, and it is right that they are celebrated and commended for their contribution to our nations.”
