Helen Morgan MP says trade deals should back British farmers
North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan stood up for British farmers in Parliament as she highlighted the risk a new trade deal poses to food and animal standards in the UK.
The Liberal Democrat MP forced a Government Minister to face MPs and answer questions about the recently-signed CPTPP trade deal by calling for an Urgent Question on Tuesday.
It comes after the Government signed the trade deal without giving MPs a chance to scrutinise it despite the deal risking undermining British health and safety standards.
Helen warned that world-leading British farmers and food producers suffer due to items such as egg products being allowed into the UK despite originating in caged battery farms, which were outlawed in Britain in 2012.
Speaking afterwards, Helen Morgan said, “The Government should be putting British farmers first in the trade deals it signs, not undermining them by allowing imports from countries with much lower welfare standards.
“Ministers should also welcome scrutiny because it leads to better decision making. Instead the Government has dodged MPs on this issue until my Urgent Question was granted.”
